Welcome Home
Bill Rogers, Executive Producer
The biggest investment you'll ever make is your home and Welcome Home gathers resources from around the nation each week to help protect and beautify your investment. From Victorian Rennovations to Home Furnishings and Home Decor to improvements to the exterior and the interior of your home.
At no time during the history of home-dwelling families has the home become the most stable part of the development of our children than it has today. Home is where we learn, where we seek shelter, where we take our meals and where we connect with others in our tribe. Home is where we learn and prepare to make a contribution to the world we live in, to become shepherds over our planet and raise a family of our own.
Welcome Home is proud to annouce that True Value Hardware will be a 2012 sponsor on the show. Headquartered in Chicago, True Value Company is one of the world's largest retailer-owned hardware cooperatives. With more than 5,000 independent retailers and an exciting new store format, they've created a compelling shopping experience for consumers, a winning opportunity for entrepreneur-retailers and a rewarding environment for those seeking a career with a company committed to its customers and growth.
"We're very excited to have such an icon on our show," comments Bill Rogers, Executive Producer for Welcome Home." True Value Hardware is synonymous with American heritage and quality brands."
True Value's cooperatives serve 54 countries through their 12 regional distribution centers and 3,000 associates. Many of the True Value retailers enjoy a rich history spanning generations in their local communities.

Welcome Home Breaths New Life into Victorian Home
It's true, they don't build them like they use to. An old Victorian Home has so much charm, the oak paneling will make make your heart skip a beat, the turrets, alcoves, and odd-shaped rooms are interesting and so
inviting. Then there's the scratch of the record needle and it's back to reality, time for restoration. Older homes may be beautiful, but they aren't designed for modern living. The floor plan of a Victorian house can seem cluttered and convoluted. Instead of open spaces, you may find a series of small rooms connected by a maze of hallways and doors. And then there's the bathroom. Although indoor plumbing was available at the turn of the century, the bathrooms (called water closets in Victorian days) were usually cramped by today's standards. Many interior walls in older homes are load-bearing. That is, they are necessary to support the weight of the upper floors. Builders in Victorian days did not have the capacity to easily span large spaces, so the numerous walls really were essential. If these walls are removed, the floors above will begin to sag. Fortunately, there are ways to update an older home while preserving its structure and maintaining its ambiance. Come along with Welcome Home in it's Home Library Series as it updates and rennovates a classic Victorian. Saturdays at 1:00 pm.

THE HISTORY BEHIND YOUR FURNITURE
Even the basic requirements of furniture design are complex, for appearance has always been as important as function, and the general tendency has been to design furniture to complement architectural interiors. Indeed, some furniture forms were conceived architecturally, with legs designed as columns; others were at least in part anthropomorphic, with legs in animal forms. Furniture design ranges from simple to elaborate, depending on the pieces’ intended use rather than on the period in which they were made.
The earliest records, such as ancient Mesopotamian inventories, describe richly decorated interiors with gold cloth and gilded furniture. Some surviving ancient Egyptian examples are elaborate and were originally sheathed in gold, but many very plain pieces were also made in ancient times. In the history of furniture, however, the elegant work takes precedence because in general it has been the best preserved. In addition, elaborate designs reveal the most about a period because high style changes more frequently than other styles to reflect new ideas. The simplest work, made for the farmer or laborer, tends to be more purely functional and timeless; tables and chairs used by working people in 1800 bc are surprisingly like tables and chairs in farmhouses of ad 1800. Dutch genre paintings of the 1600s and early 19th-century American paintings depict rural interiors that often look remarkably similar.
Your furniture may look quite different than yesteryear's furniture but it serves the same purpose: form and function.
